Aladdin
First presented as a pantomime in 1788 at the Covent Garden Theatre, London, Aladdin is one of the most popular of all pantomime titles. Based on the 1001 Arabian Night's tale, Aladdin tells the story of a young boy who wishes to marry the Princess of China. With the help of a magic lamp, his dreams come true and he and the Princess live happily after after. Characters often seen in Aladdin include Aladdin, Wishee Washee, Widow Twankey, the Princess, the Emperor, the Genie of the Lamp, the Slave of the Ring and Abanazar. Other characters seen in the pantomime include the Chinese Policemen and a host of animals ranging from pandas to camels. Although mainly set in Peking, China, Aladdin takes place in a number of locations, including Widow Twankey's Launderette, Abanazar's Lair in Egypt and the Enchanted Cave of Wonders. One of the most famous pantomime lines "New lamps for old" can be found in Aladdin.
