Cinderella
First presented as a pantomime in 1804 at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, 'Cinderella' is the most popular of all pantomime titles. Based on a variety of sources, including versions of the tale by Perrault, the Brothers Grimm and Rossini, 'Cinderella' tells the story of a young girl who dreams of marrying the Prince. With the help of her Fairy Godmother, Cinderella's dreams come true and a Happy Ending prevails. Characters often seen in 'Cinderella' include Cinderella, Buttons, the Ugly Sisters, Baron Hardup, the Fairy Godmother, Prince Charming and Dandini. Other characters sometimes seen in the pantomime include the Wicked Stepmother and the Broker's Men. Cinderella's glass slipper is probably the most famous of all pantomime props and a key component of the story as it helps Prince Charming identify his bride. The line "Cinderella, you shall go to the ball" is one of the most famous in pantomime as the Fairy Godmother conjures up a coach to take Cinderella from Hardup Hall to the Royal Ball.
